Backyard Surprise: Birdbath Gets Group Of Unexpected Avian Visitors
You install a cute birdbath, fill it with water, and wait for the pretty little songbirds to show up. The cats were looking forward to free kitty-vision all day. They were imagining themselves outside chasing sparrows and having a lunchtime feast. But all bets were off when four HUGE turkeys showed up at the birdbath.

The homeowner was not expecting turkeys at the birdbath either, but immediately announced that they weren’t discriminatory and everyone is welcome. The instructions say you should wash your turkey and let it rest, right? These gobblers are just prepping themselves early.
As with many animals, turkeys will get what they need when they need it. This group needed a drink of water. Apparently, living in Madison, Wisconsin, means you share the city with an overabundance of wild turkeys. That isn’t entirely bad, as the turkeys have adapted quite well to urban life and don’t bother people much. Although we have had (tongue-in-cheek) reports of wild turkeys rampaging through some towns, that doesn’t seem to be a problem in Madison.

Wisconsin had no wild turkeys in the 1970s. The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released some in the southern part of the state. The birds have been extraordinarily fertile. There are good populations throughout the state, and there are organized hunts to cull the flocks. Population numbers are stable, and the birds are healthy.
While that doesn’t help the homeowner, it isn’t horrible news either. Once the cats overcome their fear of the size, they may discover a skill in hunting the big birds. A nice turkey dinner is better than eating bugs.
