Danes flee Sweden
Published 2025-07-02
Danes are fleeing Sweden. This is stated by the think tank Intelligence Watch in a recent report. Since the peak year of 2010, the number of Danish citizens in Sweden has decreased by 40 percent.
This year marks 25 years since the Öresund Bridge was completed. And in the first years after the bridge was completed, it contributed to a large influx of Danes to Skåne and Malmö.
In the mid-2000s, Danish media wrote about how Danes who moved across the strait could get twice as much house for their money, and that cars only cost half as much in Sweden compared to Denmark.
Danes leave Sweden
Between 2000 and 2010, the number of Danish citizens residing in Sweden increased from 25,567 to 40,458. The entire increase was due to Danes moving to Skåne.
But since then the trend has reversed, and Danes are moving back home. Last year, the number of Danish citizens in Sweden had decreased to 24,907. That is a decline of 40 percent, and back to the same level as before the Öresund Bridge was built.
The Danes are also selling their holiday homes in Sweden, especially in Skåne, the report states.
Immigrant violence gets the blame
Intelligence Watch, which is funded by Region Skåne, several Skåne municipalities, Ikea, NCC and Tetra Pak, among others, suspects in its report that the Danes are frightened by immigration and crime.
Danes began moving back to Denmark after 2012, coinciding with the escalating gang crime in Malmö with murders in the open streets. And in Denmark, media reporting from Sweden is now predominantly negative, writing about criminal networks and Swedish child soldiers.

The migrant crisis in 2014 and 2015 and violent Islamism are other factors suspected of influencing Danes' reluctance to stay in Sweden.
The report states that it is not only Danes who are leaving Sweden. Since 2020, Norwegians have also begun to return to their homeland.
