Coyote Stuck In Tree Gets A Helping “Paw” From Springville Police
Police in Springville, Alabama, got an unexpected resistance workout the other day. They responded to a call of a coyote stuck in a tree. When they got there, they saw the coyote with one front paw stuck between the twin trunks of a crepe myrtle tree. The pup was barking and snapping a bit out of fear. Although the police were able to rescue the coyote, it took some ingenuity and brute force.
The female officer, Maggie Milazzo, had the right idea, using the leverage of her legs to push the trunks of the tree apart. She couldn’t quite get enough movement to free the frightened animal. That is when her partner, Jeff King, brought out a shovel. Using the blade of the spade like a pry bar, he wedged it in under the coyote’s paw.
Officer Milazzo worked the top of the two trunks, pushing them apart, while Officer King pried with the shovel. With one final, Herculean effort, the police officers were able to rescue the coyote. Although limping slightly, the animal ran off quickly to the comfort of the nearby wooded area.

Officer Andrew Tipton, who was standing by in case the wild animal got vicious after release, recorded the entire rescue. Fortunately, the coyote ran off after the rescue by the police officers. Following the rescue, Chief Wayne Walton said, “I’m so very proud of my officers and what they were able to do.”
Everyone involved should be proud of the effort and the result. The teamwork was the key to keeping the police officers safe and enabling the rescue of the coyote pup. Ideally, checking the animal for injury would have been nice, but it showed no signs of lingering distress.
