Tyler Childers Has Quietly Donated $500,000 To Various Blackfeet Nation Nonprofits
Tyler Childers is making significant contributions to a community he has grown close to and loves dearly.
Over the last few years, Tyler Childers has formed a close bond with the Blackfeet Nation, primarily located in northwest Montana. Not only has he become friends with these people, but earlier this summer, news was shared that Childers was quietly sending financial support to various Blackfeet nonprofit organizations.
But let’s back the story up to the very beginning of how this all came to be.
This story began when he visited the reservation a few years back and became friends with a man named Shawn. This meeting was what started Childers to rethink performing “Feathered Indians” during his concerts.
Although Childers admitted to GQ Magazine that he loved the song:
“That song has some of my favorite lines I’ve ever written, some of my favorite melodies. Not playing that song is going to make people think.”
When he was on the reservation, he hoped that many of the Indigenous men and women hadn’t heard “Feathered Indians,” as he did not want to offend them. While no one approached him about this topic as he grew close to the Blackfeet people, and the nephew of his Native American friend even admitted that he loved the song, Tyler came to the personal realization that he did not want to continue playing “Feathered Indians” live.
Instead of ending the conversation there, he turned his fear of offending these people into a positive outcome. To support the Blackfeet Nation, Childers and his wife, Senora, donate the royalties from their work to help fund Indigenous communities through grants and other forms of community aid. They do so through the Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund, which the Childers family established around the same time Tyler began exploring his relationship with the hit song.
Childers has highlighted the nation and their traditions in the past, too, teaming up with Outrider Presents last year to perform a show for the Blackfeet reservation, featuring Vincent Neil Emerson. Good music is always appreciated, but Childers also used the event to highlight deeply rooted traditions in the history of Native American tribes, like horse relay races. Pretty cool work, eh? But it does not end there. Ahead of Snipe Hunter’s release, the Blackfeet Nation had Childers visit the reservation to honor him for his contributions.
Indigenous.TV on Instagram shared the news with a collection of images and stories from various languages, food, and youth programs, along with posts from tribe members praising Childers for his generosity. In the post, it also showed images of Childers after participating in a traditional ceremony honoring the work he’s done for their community.
Some of the organizations that received support from Childers include Backpacker’s Ferry, a transportation and customizable tours company located in East Glacier Part Village that is 100% Blackfeet owned, FAST Blackfeet, a food accessibility and sustainability group in Blackfeet Country, and Blackfeet Eco Knowledge, an organization dedicated to reversing the effects of historic trauma that have effected the people, culture, language, and environment.
Recently, Indigenous.TV reported the actual sum associated with his donations to the Blackfeet Nation, and it’s quite a substantial amount:
“Now, it’s confirmed — An incredible $500,000 total has been distributed across two rounds, benefitting Indigenous food sovereignty, cases relating to Missing and Murdered Indigenous people, language preservation, Mental Health, and more.”

That’s truly incredible, and I am sure that he will continue to support Blackfeet nonprofits. In an era where many celebrities often perform charitable acts primarily for the press coverage they receive, the quietness of his donations adds another level of respect here. It’s evident that Childers cares deeply about the Blackfeet people and wants to help preserve their culture and more.
Acts like this show that Tyler Childers is not only a stellar musician but, more importantly, a phenomenal person with a caring and generous heart. Say what you want about his political and/or religious beliefs, but he’s humble, genuine, and compassionate —some highly underrated qualities in today’s society.
Go ahead and fire up “Feathered Indians” and send a few more dollars their way:
