Trump Threatens Troops in Maryland — And He’s Already Proven He Can Do It

President Trump threatened to “send in the ‘troops,’” in Chicago and in Maryland if Governor Wes Moore “needs help” reducing crime rates. Governor Moore invited President Trump to visit Baltimore but the President didn’t like his tone when he said “if you are not willing to walk our communities, keep our name out of your mouth. If you are not willing to stand with our people, keep our name out of your mouth.” That line made Moore an instant target. The President called him out for lying about his Bronze Star military award. Moore does now hold a Bronze Star, but it was only awarded years after he had already claimed credit for it. He acknowledged the error last summer in this statement. Moore, meanwhile, is a rising star in Democratic politics. George Clooney has even suggested he should be the party’s next presidential contender. A public feud with Trump may hurt him at home, but on the national stage, the attention could be exactly what he needs to raise his profile. Democrats love anyone who is willing to spar with President Trump. But could President Trump actually “send in the ‘troops,’” to Baltimore and Chicago? Normally, the National Guard is under the governor’s control. But the President can “federalize” Guard units under the Insurrection Act, which is meant for extraordinary situations when local authorities can’t or won’t maintain order. Trump already used this power in California this summer, overriding Governor Gavin Newsom, and a federal appeals court backed him. So yes—if Trump decides to, he could do it again.
