Bleecker Street recently released a new trailer and poster for Bone Lake: an erotic horror movie that has been making waves as of late for its blend of classic erotic thriller vibes, modern horror sensibilities, and frantic visuals. Here’s the movie’s official description: A couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. In this darkly hilarious and seductive horror story, a dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival. The new Bone Lake trailer offers little in the way of additional details, but it certainly sets a mood. It begins with a premise straight out of a Cinemax late-night special (“I can’t believe we have to share this house all weekend. What are we going to do?”) but slowly morphs into something much more malicious. Those who have seen Bone Lake on the festival circuit describe it as a kind of throwback to the erotic thrillers of the ’90s that builds a road between that genre, the more exploitative films that preceded mainstream erotic movies, and modern socially-driven horror. It’s at least certainly true to the style of more recent social horror movies like Barbarian and Speak No Evil, and it’s been noted that there is distinct sleazy Lifetime movie vibe to the whole thing. How excited those combinations of words got you should tell you a lot about whether this is the “fun for the whole family” cinematic experience you’ve been looking for. The Bone Lake marketing team has also not shied away from the more-than-suggestive nature of the film’s themes thus far. The trailer focuses on the words “Winners Come First,” and the movie’s posters…well, we’ll include those below so that you can draw your own conclusions from them. Bone Lake is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 3.
