Zach Top Says He Recently Tried To Go “Incognito” At A Bass Pro Shop, & I Think He Needs To Try A Lot Harder

Zach Top seems to be everywhere these days. Riding the highs of his debut album last year, the Washington native has simply flown through the ranks in country music over the past 18 months. Whether it’s his ACM win for New Male Artist this past April, his high praise from fellow artists such as Dierks Bentley or his continued domination on social media, Top has, without a doubt, become the genre’s new “it” artist. Of course, being country music’s new darling comes with its own set of challenges. Beyond the pressure to continue creating some of the best music in the genre and expanding his already stellar live show, the “I Never Lie” singer has found another issue that comes with his newfound fame: going to Bass Pro Shop. Fresh off the release of his highly anticipated sophomore record, Ain’t In It For My Health, last Friday, Top appeared on the Bobby Bones Show to discuss everything from the new album, growing up in a bluegrass band, planning his new tour and trying to navigate his popularity. Early in the interview, Bones asked Top what the biggest change had been in his life over the past year. For Top, it’s undoubtedly been becoming a public figure. Though he noted how many artists and celebrities go out of their way to keep their privacy, he still finds being recognized in public pretty amusing at this point in his career: “It’s still fun for me… I still get a kick out of it if someone recognizes me in an airport or grocery store or something, it’s still pretty fun for me.” With that being said, he’s tried (and failed) to be more incognito lately. During a recent trip to Bass Pro Shop, the 27-year-old singer/songwriter attempted to go undercover without his cowboy hat and usual 90s-inspired Western wear, instead opting for some cut-off jeans and camo Crocs. This, however, didn’t work well for him, getting spotted by fans nearly instantaneously. “I was in full relaxation, day off/off-of-the-road mode. And I was wearing a pair of cut-off jeans that were way too short and white socks that were up to my calf and camouflage Crocs, wandering through there in my ball cap and sunglasses [and] thinking I was gonna breeze through there. Sure enough, there’s a bunch of people [who’d] come up and ask to take a picture. I was like, ‘Great. Well, this is how I wanna be remembered by people in my white socks and camo Crocs.'” Though Bones and Top didn’t provide any photos from the Bass Pro trip, thankfully, a fan in the comments of Bones’ TikTok ended up sharing a picture he took with the “Use Me” singer: I’m not exactly sure who Top thought he was fooling with this “incognito” outfit, given that any country fan these days would have spotted him from a mile away. I do have to say, though, the outfit does go pretty hard, really leaning into that ’90s dad aesthetic pretty well.
