Around 1979–1980 (Hunt Brothers Spike) In late 1979 through early 1980, silver saw a massive speculative spike. Prices jumped from roughly $6/oz to over$40, peaking intraday around $50 on January 18, 1980. During that era, silver exceeded $40 for a brief but notable window. 2. The 2011 Rally In early 2011, silver once again surged. On April 29, 2011, London Closing price reached $48.7/oz, New York COMEX Close at $48.7, with intraday highs even nearing $50.36.
