Trump Administration Allegedly Offers Position To New York City Mayoral Candidate

The Trump administration allegedly has offered New York City Mayor Eric Adams a position if he abandons his re-election campaign to hurt the chances of Democratic front-runner Zohran Mamdani. According to POLITICO, an individual with “direct knowledge” of the conversations said the Trump administration offered Adams a position at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The outlet said Adams met with Trump’s team during his visit to Florida. "Adams has been offered a position at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to a person with direct knowledge of the offer who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about a sensitive matter."https://t.co/3w0mKv2ZRY — Bernadette Hogan (@bern_hogan) September 3, 2025 The New York Times reports the administration has also discussed finding a position for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. POLITICO shared further info: Sliwa has previously rejected the idea of serving in the Trump administration. Worried about New York City being led by a democratic socialist, Republicans, centrist Democrats and business community leaders have been eager to consolidate anti-Mamdani voters behind one candidate. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat and former governor who’s running as an independent, has been their preferred choice for defeating Mamdani, the Democratic nominee. But Cuomo lost decisively to the novice state assemblymember in the June Democratic primary in a shock to the Democratic establishment. Cuomo is still polling far behind Mamdani in the general election, but some surveys suggest he could defeat Mamdani head-to-head, thanks to support from Republican and independent voters. Adams did not directly deny meeting with Trump advisers during his recent jaunt to the state the president now calls his permanent residence. And he notably did not give a definitive “no” when asked if he plans to drop out of the race for mayor. Although Adams became New York City mayor as a Democrat, Mamdani soared to a surprise victory in the Democratic primary. The embattled mayor remained in the race as an independent candidate. Breaking News: President Trump's advisers are said to have discussed giving Mayor Eric Adams a position in the administration as a way to clear the field in November’s mayoral election and damage the chances of the Democratic front-runner, Zohran Mamdani. https://t.co/KztrYAiLdN — The New York Times (@nytimes) September 3, 2025 More from The New York Times: John Catsimatidis, a billionaire grocery and oil magnate in New York, said in an interview that he had spoken with Mr. Trump about the race on Sunday and expected the shape of the contest could change in the coming days. “He’s very concerned,” Mr. Catsimatidis said of the president. “How do they say it, this is for all the tea in China. This is serious.” Intermediaries for Mr. Trump have been in touch with the associates of Mr. Adams, a Democrat running as an independent, about the possibility of leaving the race, according to two of the people briefed on the discussions. One of the sources, who like the others insisted on anonymity to detail private conversations, said the talks with Mr. Adams were ongoing “in several different directions.” The Trump administration still has ambassadorship appointments to fill, as well as a number of law enforcement agencies with jobs. Mr. Adams is a former police captain and Mr. Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, has long focused on public safety. It was unclear, though, if a specific job for Mr. Adams had been discussed with those intermediaries, or if the mayor would accept it. The mayor has recently said he plans to continue his campaign and win, despite running fourth in the polls. Despite their shared party affiliation, Mr. Sliwa and Mr. Trump have few connections. Mr. Sliwa has repeatedly said he has no interest in a job in Washington, though Mr. Catsimatidis, who employs him on his radio station, could provide some leverage if he wished.
