The move by the Trump administration is an attempt to get Adams to drop out so that another Democrat or Republican mayoral candidate can defeat socialist Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming New York City mayoral elections. Conversations about a role for Adams have been taking place among high-level White House officials, but it’s unclear if the plans have made their way to the president’s desk yet, according to The New York Times. In response to speculation about his future in the mayor’s race, a spokesperson for Mayor Adams said: “Mayor Adams has not met with Donald Trump — don’t believe the noise. He is not dropping out of the race. The Mayor is fully committed to winning this election, with millions of New Yorkers preparing to cast their votes. His record is clear: crime is down, jobs are up, and he has consistently stood up for working families. Mayor Adams is focused on building on that progress and earning four more years to continue delivering for the people of New York.” Independent Mayoral Candidate Curtis Sliwa also released a statement: “The White House has not contacted me, and I’m not interested in a job with the Whitehouse. My focus is right here in New York. I’m the only candidate on a major party line who can defeat Mamdani, and I’m committed to carrying this fight through to Election Day.
