“He Fell For It” – Lainey Wilson Lied On Her First Date With Devlin “Duck” Hodges That Friends Called Her “Goose”

Duck, Duck, Goose! Lainey Wilson and Duck Hodges’ relationship is one that country fans can’t get enough of. The pair shocked the country music world when they hit the red carpet together at the 2023 ACM Awards, where the former NFL player joined her as her date. Wilson was not known for bringing men on the red carpet, other than her father, so fans loved seeing her with a tall, dark, and handsome Alabama boy. But Wilson shocked fans even more when she revealed they had been together for two years privately before making their public debut as a couple. While people in the industry knew that Wilson and Hodges were a couple, Wilson wanted to ensure “he was in it for the right reasons” before having him on her arm at events. Fast forward, and the two are now engaged, and for some country fans, this is their version of the royal wedding. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lainey Wilson (@laineywilson) While the two are busy planning a wedding, outlets are still fond of revisiting the origins of their love story. And in a recent interview, Wilson shared a hilarious anecdote about her first date with Hodges, which took place in 2021. Wilson previously shared with People that the two went to a cheap dive bar, and she loved that Hodges could ball on a budget. “We went to this old place called Silverados, and it had free beer and wine from 5 to 10 p.m. I was like, ‘This boy likes to ball on a budget too. This is gonna work out.’” During their date, Wilson also got the backstory of why Devlin’s nickname is Duck (which he primarily goes by nowadays). Wilson shared with Southern Living: “He said he was playing football at Samford (University), and the coach there (said), ‘You remind me of one of my favorite quarterbacks ever, and his name was Duck.” And he had a really good season that year. And so the whole team started saying, “It’s Duck season; it’s Duck season!’ So that’s how he got Duck.” After learning that backstory, and the Duck lives up to his nickname as he’s a world champion duck caller, Wilson decided to let some of her humor shine and let a joke rip about what friends liked to call her. “He sure has. On our first date, I told him that people call me Goose. I was lying, but he fell for it. I think he was like, ‘Oh, I’m in love.’” Wonder how long she let that one ride before breaking the news to him that was a lie… However, it would have been a great wedding hashtag for them if it were true, and there’s a lot of play on words about finding the one from the childhood game “duck, duck, goose.” Clearly, that little white lie did not get in the way of these two falling in love. Wilson has previously shared that she was never able to write love songs until she met Duck. “I was never really able to write love songs, because I don’t know if I had actually felt it, but I’m writing me some love songs now. I’m grateful for him.” Thank goodness she found someone who treats her well, because I’m a suck for a Lainey Wilson love song, and I can’t wait to hear what more comes to her mind in this season of wedding planning.
