Megan Moroney Recalls Waiting Outside Kacey Musgraves’ Bus As A Young Fan… Would Later Share A Dressing Room At The CMA Awards

Talk about a full-circle moment. It should go without saying that Megan Moroney has become country music’s “it” girl over the past year or so. After breaking out in a big way back in 2023 with the release of her debut album, Lucky, along with the 4x platinum smash hit, “Tennessee Orange,” the Georgia native has continued her rise to the top of the genre recently. Beyond leading the upcoming CMA Awards in November with six nominations, including Female Vocalist and Album of the Year (Am I Okay?), the Georgia native also scored major career milestones, scoring her second career #1 with “6 Months Later” and her second career certified gold album, also for Am I Okay?. Though the “I’m Not Pretty” singer has already cemented herself as one of the genre’s biggest acts for the foreseeable future, there are still plenty of moments recently that have left her feeling starstruck. In particular, sharing a dressing room with Kacey Musgraves during last year’s CMA Awards was one of these moments. During an appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast last week, Moroney opened up about everything from the current state of her upcoming record, her friendship with Kenny Chesney, her evolving expectations in relationships and more. Later in the podcast, Shane asked Moroney about the artists who have impacted her music the most. Not skipping a beat, the 28-year-old singer/songwriter immediately pointed to the likes of Musgraves, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift. With that being said, however, it was Musgraves who was the driving force behind her becoming a songwriter. “Miranda and Kacey. I think Taylor, too, obviously. I grew up on her music, but Kacey was the first artist that made me want to write my own music.” Moroney would then share that she even waited outside of Musgraves’ tour bus years ago after one of her concerts just for the opportunity to meet her, not having the slightest clue that she would be nominated alongside the 8x Grammy winner for Female Vocalist of the Year at the 58th CMA Awards last year. “It was really cool because I grew up loving Kacey Musgraves. I even waited outside of her bus at a show in Alabama, and I got to meet her. And then we shared a dressing room at the CMA Awards last year. Shane would then joke and ask her if she told Musgraves that she waited outside of her bus all those years ago. Moroney confirmed that she told the “Slow Burn” singer about it at last year’s CMAs before noting just how nice she was during the hectic night. “Oh, she knows. When I met her too, I wasn’t expecting [anything] because she was performing, and award shows are just stressful. I wasn’t even expecting her to take the time to take a picture with me or anything ’cause the CMAs put us together. She could have been like, ‘Girl… remember when you stalked me behind the bus? Now I have to share a dressing room with this girl?’ But she was so kind and sweet and was like, ‘Thanks for all the nice things you always say about me.’ And [she] took the time to get pictures, and it was just really sweet. I just love her.” There’s no doubt that country music has had its fair share of full-circle moments like this, from Merle Haggard being in attendance at Johnny Cash’s legendary San Quentin Prison performance before pursuing a career in music to Eric Church receiving Taylor Swift’s first gold record after getting kicked off of Rascal Flatts tour. I’d definitely chalk this down as another one of those fun, quirky stories as well. Watch the full podcast here: Megan Moroney Tour Dates October 18 – Tampa, FL – Julian B.
