The origins of Sonic Youth can be found in New York City’s downtown art scene in 1981, when guitarist Thurston Moore and bassist Kim Gordon, both immersed in the city’s experimental underground, formed the group that would redefine the boundaries of rock music. Joined by guitarist Lee Ranaldo, who had been playing with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca, the band initially explored dissonance, feedback, and alternative tunings in ways that defied mainstream conventions. Drummer Richard Edson appeared on their earliest recordings before being replaced by Bob Bert, and later by Steve Shelley, whose arrival in 1985 solidified the classic lineup.
