Another one. It’s been a year full of ups and downs for Ella Langley. Riding the highs of the continued success of “you look like you love me” and hungover, the Alabama native has continued her path to superstardom over the past 12 months, notably taking home five ACM Awards this past April and leading all artists with 6 CMA Award nominations at the upcoming ceremony in November. With that being said, however, she hit a major road bump towards the end of the summer when she had to cancel a month’s worth of shows due to ongoing health issues. Now that she’s fully healthy and back on the road once again, fans everywhere are more than ready to not only see her back on stage but to hear new music from the “weren’t for the wind” singer after the massive success of her sophomore effort, hungover. And judging by the volume of unreleased songs she’s been teasing lately, it looks like she’s gearing up for the release of her third record, one that has been in the works for a year and a half, sooner rather than later. A few weeks ago, during her performance at the Live At The Station Festival in College Station, Texas, Langley dropped the bomb that fans can expect one or two new tracks before the end of the year. Before performing her highly anticipated unreleased song, “Choosin’ Texas,” she said: “There will be maybe one or two off of it this year. This might or might not be the next one… or the first one, I guess.” Flash forward to last week at her sold-out set in Durant, Oklahoma, at Choctaw Music Fest last week, and she confirmed that not only is “Choosin’ Texas” going to be the lead single off of her upcoming album, it’s coming out this Friday, October 17th. Now that the cat’s out of the bag with “Choosin’ Texas,” Langley has decided to tease fans once again with another brand new, unreleased song, titled “I Gotta Quit” at a surprise appearance at The Listening Room in Nashville last night. In the midst of playing a set featuring the aforementioned “Choosin’ Texas,” as well as “Strangers” with Kameron Marlowe and “you look like you love me” with co-writer, Aaron Raitiere, she also debuted “I Gotta Quit.” And it looks like another hit for the rising star. Centering around trying to quit thinking about an ex, the track is an uptempo toe-tapper that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser whenever she debuts the song with a full backing band. Clearly a tongue-in-cheek take on a breakup, Langley laments how she sees her ex in everything in the melodic chorus. “Everywhere I go, everything I seeEven in my dreams, it’s haunting meTell me what I gotta say, tell me what I gotta doDamn it, I gotta quit thinking about you” Overall, “I Gotta Quit” is simply one of those songs that can’t help but make you laugh. I think it goes without saying that everyone has told themselves at one point or another to simply stop giving their ex the time of day, and she captures it perfectly here with her signature charm and delivery, coupled with some hilarious, almost Tyler Childers-esque adlibs on the bridge. It’s a fairly surface-level song lyrically, but that’s all it has to be. As of now, “I Gotta Quit” has no release date. However, judging by Langley’s earlier comments, there’s a chance that it might find its way on streaming services before the end of the year. For now, we’ll just have to wait.
