Man Pauses Oil Change To Offer A Quick Snack To A Curious Bird Friend
Squid Layfield was changing the oil in his truck when he got a visitor. A Steller’s jay flew out of a nearby tree, wanting to be his bird friend. Although a relative of the blue jay, the Steller’s jay is larger and darker. Given the speed at which Squid produced the handful of nuts, we can safely assume that this little bird friend is a frequent flyer at the Squid Diner.

Steller’s jays get their name from Georg Steller, who discovered them on an island in Alaska in 1741. Steller was a naturalist on a Russian ship exploring the area. The species was officially named after Steller in 1788. He also discovered the Steller’s sea eagle and Steller’s sea lion.
This one appears to be familiar enough with Squid to eat out of his hand without hesitation. Although he jokingly calls them “government surveillance” jays, it is apparent that he likes his little bird friend.

Blue jays are a more vibrant, bright blue, while the Steller’s jay is darker with only a few bright highlights. As the Eastern blue jays are moving farther westward, Steller’s jays are moving eastward. Currently, the two species are meeting up in the Rockies, where some are interbreeding. This is creating a new, hybrid species that has no name yet.
Both blue jays and Steller’s jays can mimic other animal sounds. While the blue jay does an incredible scream of a red-shouldered hawk, the Steller’s jay has a larger repertoire. In addition to mimicking some mechanical items, the jay can imitate squirrels, dogs, cats, chickens, and other birds. Squid’s bird friend and the blue jay build their nests with mud, and are the only North American jays with crests.
