Hear The Hilarious Song Written By Chris Stapleton About Winding Up Naked In A Hotel Hallway
Can’t believe he didn’t keep this one for himself.
I’ve said a million times that I’m pretty sure Chris Stapleton could sing the phone book and make it a hit. The guy is undeniably one of the most talented singers and songwriters to ever come through Nashville.
But I can see why he let somebody record this one.
If you’re not familiar with Jimmy Stewart, you’ve no doubt heard his work. Stewart is a musician who’s played with some of the biggest names in country music, from Reba and Dolly Parton to Brooks & Dunn and…yes, Chris Stapleton.
Stewart has released two of his own albums, including Poor Rambler back in 2016. And tucked on that album is a hilarious song co-written by Stewart along with Shawn Camp and none other than the “You Should Probably Leave” singer.
The song’s called “Nekkid,” and as it turns out, it was inspired by a true story from Stewart’s time on the road. During a recent performance alongside Kix Brooks at a concert for “Hope On The Inside” (an incredible organization that helps empower inmates to transition back to life on the outside after being released…much more on them coming soon), Stewart revealed that the song took place at what was then the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
And as he alludes to in the song, it sounds like a wild night:
“I was nekkid, oh I was nekkid as hell
On the 32nd floor of the Taj Mahal hotel
I was nekkid, living a bad dream
In a desperate situation hoping I would not be seen
‘Cause I was nekkid
Well at first I tried to hide it, but I couldn’t hide it all
So I laid down on my back behind a table by the wall
I guess I should not have been drinkin’, carryin’ on ’til 2 or 3
But how’d I wind up in that hallway when all I had to do was pee?”
Happens to the best of us.
It’s also not the only tongue-in-cheek song Stapleton has written throughout his career. A few years ago, it was revealed that Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert have a song registered to BMI (the massive performing rights organization that handles licensing and royalties for songwriters) called “Somebody Winds Up Pregnant,” which so far hasn’t seen the light of day.
I can only imagine the songs that a guy like Chris Stapleton has written throughout the years, some for his own albums and some just for fun and everything in between.
Like I said, Stapleton could sing pretty much anything and make it a hit, so there’s no doubt that if he decided to record “Nekkid” at some point it would be a hit. But at least we get to hear it from Stewart – because it sounds like they had one hell of a night in the Taj Mahal Hotel back in the day.
