Brent Cobb Recalls Leaving The Grammys Early, Hanging Out With Nicki Minaj, Bob Weir & Sturgill Simpson At An Afterparty: “It Was Such A Blur”

Brent Cobb had quite the wild night at the Grammys in 2018. Brent Cobb stopped by the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about mentoring Luke Combs and the Red Clay Strays and watching them take off, how his songs have ended up in Yellowstone and Landman, how his young son inspired him to release his rock record Ain’t Rocked In A While, how his incredibly talented cousin, producer Dave Cobb, produced his very first album, a story about how Tyler Childers once opened for him and much more. Though he might not be a household name (at least in some house holds), Brent Cobb is someone that everyone should know. He’s an uberly talented and endlessly versatile artist that has released songs in the Americana, country and rock and roll spaces. Cobb has even scored a Grammy Nomination for his 2016 album Shine On Rainy Day. It was nominated for a “Best American Album Award” at the 60th Annual Grammys. The day he found out about that is one that he’ll never forget. Cobb says he was out on tour when his manager at the time gave him the call and told him the good news… and he didn’t really know how to take it at first: “I was on tour, it might have been that tour I took Colter on. I was somewhere in the U.K., I’m pretty sure, and my manager called me and said, ‘Hey ol’ boy, just letting you know, ‘Shine On Rainy Day’ is nominated for a Grammy.’ I was like, ‘Damn, alright. That’s wild.'” What do you do when your album is nominated for a Grammy? You go to the Grammys, of course! Brent Cobb saw it as an incredible opportunity, and he and his wife, Layne, traveled to New York City for the highly esteemed ceremony. It was the first time that Brent Cobb’s wife had ever been to the Big Apple. They were incredibly grateful to be there… but they couldn’t find a place to smoke a cigarette: “Me and my wife went… you can’t not go to the Grammys when you get nominated… It was the only time, I think, that they had the Grammys in New York instead of Los Angeles. Me and my wife went up there, and we were trying to find a place where you could smoke. You can’t smoke anywhere. And also, you couldn’t order anymore beer when the taping started. So we had one beer a piece, and we couldn’t smoke a cigarette anywhere.  We sat in and we watched the first couple moments of it in the audience. I think it was at Madison Square Garden. And then… we left. We went back to the hotel. We got us a six pack, hung out at the hotel and watched the rest of the Grammys from the hotel room.” That’s hilarious… but completely understandable. Clearly, the Grammy Awards weren’t the Cobb couple’s scene since a) they couldn’t smoke a cig and b) they stopped serving beer once the taping began. So they went to a place where they could do those things, and got to watch the Grammys in a much more enjoyable fashion. And though they left the show early, they still hit up the afterparty. Brent Cobb says it was a very memorable part of the trip… even though he can’t remember all that much about it. That may or may not have something to do with running into Grateful Dead frontman Bob Weir: “We hung out with, let’s see… Nicki Minaj was at an afterparty that we (there for). I was hanging out with Sturgill Simpson and his wife. And Nicki Minaj was playing the afterparty. Bob Weir was hanging out. I think we ate a mushroom together maybe. Who else are you doing to (eat a mushroom) with? It was such a blur, I know there’s funnier stories to that. Me and Layne laugh about it, it was her first time in New York City.” @whiskeyriff Sounds like one helluva night. // Check out the latest Whiskey Riff Raff episode with @Brent Cobb now.
