Jamey Johnson & Riley Green Team Up For Classic Country Leavin’ Song, “Smoke”
Today, Jamey Johnson released a new song called “Smoke” with his friend Riley Green, a classic country breakup song written by Riley and Jamey along with longtime Riley Green collaborator, Erik Dylan.
Of course, you know when these two Bama boys get together it’s going to be good, but this is actually the first time they’ve recorded an original song together. Riley has always noted Jamey as one of his musical inspirations, so it’s exciting that they’ve finally teamed up in this capacity and it’s a great song.
The opening verse finds Johnson not-so-sad that this girl is gone:
“She’s mad, she’s leaving
She’s had enough of me
Blah blah blah
She’s hot, she’s steaming
She’s packing up and she’s
Gone gone gone
Was that white cloud from her tailpipes
Or them Firestones kicking up dust
Felt like a good time
To kick back and fire one up”
In the chorus, he admits that the feelings and realizations of why it went wrong are clouded from all of the “smoke”:
Couldn’t see which way she went
Or which way I went wrong
Couldn’t see why she left so early
Or why she stayed so long
There was something burning my eyes
Turning my head to stone
I bet it would’ve hurt to watch her go
Good thing I can’t see through all this smoke”
I love the production and concept of this tune, and I know fans of both Riley and Jamey are going to really enjoy this one too.
Jamey most recently released his Midnight Gasoline record in 2024, which was his first new solo album in 14 years. He toured this year, and he previously shared that he was working on new music, and I’m assuming this song was part of that:
“We are going to do some of the new stuff. We will do some of the songs from ‘Midnight Gasoline’ from last year and all the years before. Whatever album you like, we will do some of those songs. It’s exciting to play the new songs.
I like it when people tell me they have heard the new stuff and they like it. I like it when people have something else to listen to. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.”
It’s likely that this song will be included on some sort of upcoming project, though nothing has been officially announced, and if it is going to be on a future album, I think we’re in for something really great.
Do yourself a favor and check it out, it’s bad***:
