Universal, the studio behind the Mummy movies both great and terrible, has at long last decided to give the people what they want: More Mummy. And I don’t mean in the form of more attempts to reboot the Mummy, to spin off a new franchise, to bring in a new set of stars. No: They are giving us more Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser Mummy. The one true Mummy.
To be more precise, Weisz and Fraser are “in talks” with Universal Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A pair of directors are attached to this edition of The Mummy returns: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who work under the name Radio Silence and are responsible for both Ready or Not and the last two Scream movies (that’s five and six for those who got lost in the confusing titles). One of the producers of 1999’s Mummy, Sean Daniel, will return to the fold in the same role.
The Mummy starred Fraser as treasure hunter Rick O’Connell; Weisz as perfect librarian Evelyn Carnahan; John Hannah as her brother Jonathan; Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep, the awakened mummy; Patricia Velásquez as Anck-su-namun; and Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bey. It’s not clear yet if any other actors will return, though Fehr recently told an interviewer, “Like you, I hope that we get a chance to do this again. I can tell you that we all would be happy to do it again. Seeing everybody again, it’s like, my God, I’d be the most blessed human being to get to work with these guys again. Everybody’s so lovely, it’d be a blessing.”
The main cast returned for the sequel, The Mummy Returns, which also marked the cinematic debut of one Dwayne Johnson. A third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, starred Fraser and Jet Li, and is notable for being written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who are currently much better known as the creators of Wednesday.
As for the new film’s story, THR says, “One source describes the project as not a reboot, but rather a sequel that would disregard the events of the third movie. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay.”
(If you, like me, never actually saw the third movie, you may feel slightly vindicated by this.)
Coggeshall seems like a slightly odd choice for this series; his screenwriting work includes the TV series Watch Over Me; Scream: The TV Series; the Mark Wahlberg movie The Family Plan; and the film The Deliverance. But then again, the writers of the first Fraser/Weisz Mummy also had unexpected resumes, so maybe this is just keeping with tradition.
No word yet on when we will all be rushing to theaters for this absolute gift from the universe. (Will it go head to head with Lee Cronin’s Mummy? Wouldn’t that be fun.) In the meantime, I feel compelled to note that the iconic Super Yaki bumper sticker celebrating the 1999 movie is currently on sale. [end-mark]
