EXCLUSIVE: Country Hitmaker Jason Michael Carroll Is Back With Powerful New Single, “What Ever Happened To Heroes”

Even all these years after he released maybe the saddest country song of all time, Jason Michael Carroll is still tugging at the heartstrings – and issuing a call to action. You probably recognize Carroll for his many of hits of the early 2000s, songs like “Livin’ Our Love Song,” “Where I’m From” (still a banger if you haven’t listened to it lately), and of course the heartbreaking “Alyssa Lies” from 2006. And even after all these years, his powerful songwriting is still on full display. JMC is back this week with a brand new single, “What Ever Happened To Heroes,” that’s sure to resonate with everybody during these times that we’re living in. The song, written by Jason Michael Carroll along with Garrett Bradford, is a powerful call to action that reflects on the need for good people to stand up for what’s right, weaving in vivid western imagery as he longs for a time when heroes were there to save the day: “The world’s not a black and white western Like we watched back on grandpa’s TV It’s all burning down, the Duke’s in the ground And outlaws are making the laws in DC” (A-freaking-men. Just had to say that before we got to the chorus). “I still like to think that the cowboys are holed up Bandaging wounds, makin’ plans to return One of these nights, they’ll ride in, clouds of gunsmoke Giving those bad guys what they deserve It could happen I suppose But tell me whatever happened to heroes?” Man, looking around at all that’s going on in the world, that one hits hard right now. Speaking on the song, Carroll said that the idea immediately resonated with him: “This one stopped me in my tracks. I don’t watch the news much anymore because the state of the world often depresses me. Where’s the justice? Where’s the accountability? What happened to right and wrong? What happened to common sense? What ever happened to heroes?” It’s an important question right now, at a time when it seems like it’s easier to just watch the world burn than it is to grab a bucket or a hose. But more than that, it’s a call to action to get off the sidelines and make the world a better place. There aren’t any heroes waiting to swoop in and save us, just good people who far outnumber the bad that we see on the news. That’s one reason the song resonated so deeply with me as soon as I heard it for the first time, and why we’re so excited to be able to bring you your first listen to the latest song before it drops everywhere tomorrow: “What Ever Happened To Heroes” is the latest single off of Jason Michael Carroll’s upcoming studio album, Anthem, which drops in 2026.The post EXCLUSIVE: Country Hitmaker Jason Michael Carroll Is Back With Powerful New Single, “What Ever Happened To Heroes” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
