Ernest Brings Out Jamey Johnson For Surprise Cover Of Glen Campbell’s “Southern Nights” At Star-Studded Ryman Show

The stars were out last night at the Mother Church. You never quite know what to expect at any Nashville show. Just over the past few months, we’ve seen everything from Lainey Wilson joining Mumford & Sons during their recent performance at Bridgestone Arena to Sierra Ferrell teaming up with English alt. rock star, YUNGBLUD, during a performance at Robert’s Western World. Though those were some incredibly fun, unexpected crossovers, they pale in comparison to the all-star cast Ernest brought out during his two-nights at the Ryman Auditorium this week. Beginning with his first show on Tuesday, November 4th, the “Flower Shops” singer brought a star-studded cast that featured the likes of David Lee Murphy for a performance of his ’90s country staple, “Dust on the Bottle,” the legendary songwriter, Dean Dillion, for a performance of “The Chair,” Dierks Bentley for a performance of “What Was I Thinkin'” and Rhett Atkins for a performance “That Ain’t My Truck.” It should go without saying that a Ernest concert containing that much ’90s country star power (along with Bentley who’s a 2000s staple in his own right) would be one for the ages. With that being said, however, Ernest wasn’t done bringing out a new batch of stars for his second night at the Mother Church. In case you didn’t think bringing out Murphy, Dillon, Bentley and Atkins was impresssive enough, the Tennessee native decided to bring out the likes of Jamey Johnson, HARDY, Billy Dean and viral 18-year-old vocalist, Ruby Leigh, along with Murphy once again for night two at the Ryman. Overall, night two was filled with some incredible duets. Unsurprisingly, HARDY performed “Signed Sober You” and the Morgan Wallen smash hit, “More Than My Hometown,” both of which were penned by HARDY. Dean would join Ernest his 1990 Top 5 hit, “Only Here For A Little While.” Leigh would deliver an absolutely stellar cover of LeAnn Rimes’ “Blue,” while Murphy joined the “Tennesee Queen” singer for a second performance of “Dust on the Bottle.” Night two’s standout moment, however, came in the form of Jamey Johnson surprising the crowd and joining Ernest for a cover of Glen Campbell’s smash crossover hit, “Southern Nights.” Hardly needing an introduction, “Southern Nights” in undoubtedly one of the most popular songs in the Rhinestoned Cowboy’s legendary discography. First written and recorded by Allen Toussaint in 1975, the track was popularized when Campbell released it on his 1977 album of the same name. Scoring a crossover hit, “Southern Nights” would reach number one on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 as well as the Hot Country Songs and Adult Contemporary chart. Needless to say, the track has remained one of the most popular country songs of the ’70s, and it’s captured beautifully here by both Ernest and Johnson. There’s no doubt that Campbell dabbled in multiple different sonic styles throughout his career and especially on “Southern Nights,” which is highlighted by bouncy, pop-inspired production. Here, the duo give the song a bit of a jazzy flare, complete with some smooth saxophone that breathes new life into the late ’70s staple.
