Colt Ford Says Brantley Gilbert Took Off His Watch & Was Ready To Throw Hands With The Doctors In The Hospital After His Heart Attack
That’s who you want in your corner during an emergency.
Unfortunately I’ve experienced firsthand just how frustrating it can be when a loved one’s in the hospital and the doctors aren’t doing everything they could be doing. You’ve gotta either be able to advocate for yourself or have somebody there to do it for you.
And luckily for Colt Ford, he had Brantley Gilbert – and it may have very well saved his life.
Last year, the country rapper suffered a serious heart attack after a sold-out show at the Gilbert, Arizona, location of Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row. The singer/songwriter was rushed to Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona, where he was considered to be in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Weeks after the medical emergency, the 54-year-old spoke publicly for the first time on the Big D & Bubba Show, detailing the scary event and revealing that he was declared clinically dead three times before being stabilized:
“It’s just been a traumatic, crazy experience, guys. I don’t even remember coming out here to do a show in Phoenix. I died three times. Luckily, my band came out to check on me…they came out to check on me, and then all of a sudden they were like, ‘Oh God,’ and then that is when all hell broke loose.”
This Mayo Clinic out here in Phoenix, if it was going to happen, God could not have had me in a better place. The big doc out here said, ‘I wouldn’t give me 1%, but I give you 0.1% that you’d survive.’ They brought me back. They saved my life. The Lord had more for me to do.”
Obviously Colt has a close friendship with Brantley Gilbert. The two have teamed up on music numerous times, and even wrote “Dirt Road Anthem” together, which became a hit not only for Brantley but also for Jason Aldean.
In fact Colt says that Brantley is more like a brother than a friend at this point. And when his brother wasn’t happy with the care Colt was getting after his heart attack, he was there and ready to take matters into his own hands – literally.
During a recent interview with Big D & Bubba, Colt recalls the first hospital that he was taken to not having the resources that were needed to save his life. Colt needed to be transferred to another hospital, but the hospital wasn’t giving anybody there any information:
“They didn’t want to tell anybody anything. They couldn’t get information, so they were getting agitated about that, because nobody here is related to me.
Brantley had done got to the point where they weren’t doing what he wanted them to do and they weren’t telling him what was going on, so he took his Rolex off and gave it to his security guy. He called Amber, his wife, and goes, ‘I’m about to go to jail if they don’t get something done here with Colt.’
I mean, he’d done made up his mind… He was like, ‘There’s nothing else I can do.’ He said, ‘I was standing there looking at him with your blood all over him from, you know, however many hours of surgery,’ and that wasn’t going to work for him…
Brantley was like, ‘Either you’re going to do something or you’re going back in there as a patient.'”
Now, I’ve met Brantley Gilbert before and he honestly couldn’t have been nicer and easier to talk to. But I also know that he’s not one who’s going to back down from what he thinks is right, especially when his friend’s life is on the line. As Colt put it:
“He is the sweetest guy in the world until you start messing with his family. And then he’s like a real life Sons of Anarchy character.”
And that’s exactly who you want in your corner during an emergency.
