WATCH: Johnny Cash’s Son, John Carter, Gives Tour Of Iconic “Cash Cabin” Recording Studio
The Cash Cabin just might be one of the most historic recording studios in the world.
If you’ve never heard of the Cash Cabin, and you’re guessing that it’s associated with Johnny Cash, you’d be correct. The structure was built by Johnny Cash in 1979, and it’s located in Hendersonville, Kentucky – just a short drive from Nashville. It was originally owned by Johnny and June Carter Cash, and now belongs to to their son, John Carter Cash.
The private recording studio looks more like a hunting cabin than anything else, but it’s actually home to the creative, musical endeavors of the son of John and June… and whoever else he trusts to use and appreciate the space. Jamey Johnson recently stated on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast that he loves utilizing the Cash Cabin, and says that it feels like it should be a museum.
John Carter insists that the space still serve the purpose that his father intended it to be, and explained that in a new video from Huckberry:
“Originally, it was just a cabin in the woods. My father and mother would travel on the road, and so he wanted to have a place that was close to the house where he could go and just relax, take it easy, and sort of be away from everything.”
The recently shared video gives people a look inside the cabin that’s traditionally been closed off to the public. Though a lot about it has changed over the years, there are still plenty of things that have stayed the same as it was when Cash built it in the late 70s. The larger, main space that’s original to the cabin features a signed mantle – with signatures of artists from Eddy Arnold to Taylor Swift – and acts as the focal point for the space.
John Carter says the original space is where at least half of the songs included on Cash’s American Recording album were recorded.
The door to the kitchen features a stained glass tribute to Maybelle Carter, John Carter’s grandmother (and June Carter’s mom) who was a female country music pioneer. The table located within the kitchen itself is the site of where many songs have been written, and the window next to it still has the drapes that June Carter hung up herself in 1979.
When you get to the actual Cash Cabin studio, a late 1800’s organ is tucked over in the corner. And one of Johnny Cash’s guitar picks is sealed in the glass between the studio and the console room. Speaking of the console room, it’s been laid out eclectically over the years, with no rhyme or reason to it all. And though the cabin itself might be old, the technology featured in the room to be used by sound engineers and producers is as state-of-the-art as it gets.
That being said, the console room houses some of the oldest items in the cabin. A rocking chair that Johnny Cash spent a lot of time in sits in the middle of the room, and a couch from 1968 that was originally in the home of Johnny and June Carter Cash before being moved to the cabin frames the back wall – and has so for decades.
Then there are a couple of zany rooms. One being the “game room,” which isn’t what you think. There’s no pool table in sight. Instead, it’s littered with taxidermy and pianos. The “fish room,” where vocals are typically recorded, one ups the “game room.” There are plenty of trophy fish hanging up on the walls that the Cash family has actually caught through the years.
All in all, it’s a really cool look inside the historic building that meant so much to Johnny and June Carter Cash. The most surprising thing you’ll probably learn from the video? Johnny Cash was apparently a champion boomerang thrower. John Carter Cash was as excited to share that fun fact as he was the ins and outs of the cabin itself.
And John Carter hopes that he can continue to cherish and employ the magic of the Cash Cabin for years to come:
“If I look at the next 20 years here, I hope I can grow to be an old man in these walls. I hope that I can have some quiet time. I hope that I can sit on the front porch and play my guitar and look at the new life that’s being created around me and appreciate it. I wouldn’t know where else to go if I didn’t go here. This is my home. This is where my creative journey continues.”
