Mind Over Menopause: Hypnosis Works
While the Trump administration is busy pushing hormone replacement therapy for menopause, a new study suggests you might not need Big Pharma at all. How about a little hypnosis?
A new randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open found that self-administered hypnosis can significantly reduce hot flashes in postmenopausal women without hormones, prescriptions, or side effects.
Researchers studied 250 women who experienced frequent hot flashes. Those who listened to daily hypnosis audio sessions saw a 53% reduction in hot flash severity after six weeks, compared to 41% in the control group. By week twelve, that benefit grew to 61%, with participants also reporting fewer sleep disruptions and improved quality of life.
And no, this isn’t crystal ball witchcraft. Hypnosis in this study involved guided mental imagery that helps women place themselves outside the moment of discomfort, essentially training the brain to regulate its own response to heat and stress. I used something similar myself called hypnobirthing during natural childbirth, and I can tell you firsthand: it works.
So while the government’s busy rewriting the rules to make Pfizer and Novo Nordisk richer, science is quietly suggesting something radical: your brain might be the most powerful therapy you’ve got.
