Video game designer Hideo Kojima has paired up with Disney (Disney?!?) for an animated series based on his award-winning video game Death Stranding. Death Stranding Isolations (a working title) is expected to arrive on the Marvel-and-Star Wars-saturated streaming platform Disney+ in 2027. In Death Stranding, a terrible and mysterious event has caused beached things, “grotesque creatures from the afterlife,” to appear in the world. The main character (played by The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus) is a porter who delivers supplies to what’s left of humanity. It sounds very normal when you summarize it, but the devil’s in the details—like the “bridge babies” that exist in a state between life and death, and allow people to know when a beached thing is going to appear. Also the beached things explode when they eat people. Also there’s rain that makes you old. Also every new detail I learn about this game is fascinating. However! Death Stranding Isolations will not follow the plot of the game (the same is true of the Death Stranding anime and the Death Stranding movie, the latter of which is being directed by Pig’s Michael Sarnoski). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the synopsis for the series looks like this: Set in the world of Death Stranding, Death Stranding Isolations (working title) will tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games. The upcoming series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure. It’s not a ton to go on. Reportedly, Japan’s E&H Production is working on the animation, which will be in “traditional hand-drawn 2D animation style.” Takayuki Sano (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods) will direct. Speaking at a Disney event in Hong Kong, Kojima said that he wanted to make the series in order to share the world of Death Stranding with people who don’t play video games. He was already a fan of Disney, and had worked with them on Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds. According to THR, “He added that Disney approached him about the project while working together on the doc.” A poster for the show includes its planned 2027 debut.[end-mark] The post Disney (Yes, Disney) Teams With Hideo Kojima on a Death Stranding Animated Series appeared first on Reactor.
