On Friday night, two law enforcement vehicles who were supporting Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade crashed into each other. Maryville Police Department motorcycle officer Justin Brown was rushed to the hospital following the accident, where he is now battling for his life. The state trooper was also involved in the crash suffered no significant injuries. At 6:11 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2025, while providing a dignitary protection detail escort for Vice President JD Vance on East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merrit Road, Maryville Police Officer FTO Justin Brown was critically injured when his police motorcycle was involved in a collision with a Tennessee Highway Patrol SUV unit. Chief Tony Crisp reported that a group of citizens on the scene immediately administered urgent first aid and played a critical role in saving the life of the officer. “To those individuals whose quick response saved FTO Brown’s life last night, we could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” said Chief Crisp. FTO Brown was transported by AMR (American Medical Response) to UT hospital where he remains in critical condition with significant injuries. He was taken to surgery at 10 a.m. November 15. Chief Crisp acknowledged the superb efforts by AMR who provided excellent and professional care, as well as the excellent initial and ongoing care and expertise of the University of Tennessee medical staff. The Tennessee Highway Patrol CIRT (Critical Incident Response Team) is actively investigating the crash. No additional details have been released. Chief Crisp acknowledged the hundreds of messages, emails, and phone calls as well as the thousands of responses over social media. “We are grateful for each and every one and appreciate the prayers and support from all over the state,” said Chief Crisp. “Our hearts and prayers also go out to the trooper involved in the crash.” Multiple members of the law enforcement community, local, state and federal agencies have offered and administered additional services and support. “The Maryville Police Department extends our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us through this situation,” said Chief Crisp. “Please continue to keep FTO Brown, his family, his medical team in your prayers. We know they are working.” Justin Brown underwent surgery on Saturday morning, but he is still in critical condition. ABC News has the latest update on his condition: Brown was taken to a hospital in critical condition and he underwent surgery on Saturday morning, Maryville police said. An ambulance that was part of the motorcade also stopped and gave him immediate medical attention, according to Special Agent Jason Pack, director of communications with the Tennessee Department of Safety. Paramedics evaluated the trooper who was involved in the collision, and he was not transported, officials said. This is so tragic. Please pray for Justin Brown and his family. May God heal him! Thankfully, Vice President JD Vance was not impacted in any way from the crash. USA Today shared a statement from the Secret Service: Vance flew into McGhee Tyson Airport the evening of Nov. 14 before traveling to Blackberry Farm, a resort in Walland, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network. The Secret Service said in a statement it was monitoring the situation. “The safety and movement of our protectees were not impacted by this incident,” said Katherine Pierce, the resident in charge of the Knoxville resident office for the Secret Service. “We value our local law enforcement partners for their commitment and service and stand beside them during this difficult time.”
