The 2 songs Keith Richards said he would like to have written
Alongside singer Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards wrote most of The Rolling Stones’ songs, which were fundamental to the transformation he, Jagger, and groups like The Beatles brought to popular music. One of the most successful guitarists and songwriters of all time, he was, unlike many of his peers, always interested in other people’s music, especially the work produced in the 1950s and 1960s.
Over the years, Richards has spoken about many artists and songs he admired, even mentioning two tracks he loves and wishes he had written.

Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Goode"

The first song is "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry, who was one of Richards' biggest heroes, with whom he had the chance to play with, also producing the movie "Chuck Berry Hail! Hail! Rock 'N' Roll" (1987). One year earlier, he had inducted Berry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During his speech, he said: "It's difficult for me to talk about Chuck Berry because I lifted every lick he had ever played (laughs). So I'm gonna keep it very short. This is a gentleman that started it all as far as I'm concerned," he said.
Curiously, during the making of the special concerts held in 1986 to celebrate Chuck’s 60th birthday, which would later be featured in the film, he and Richards had a falling out. As he recalled in a 2014 interview with Jimmy Fallon, Berry punched him after he tried to play his guitar without asking. "Absolutely, Chuck was a major influence for me, not just in guitar playing, (but in) songwriting."
Keith Richards continued:
"He did (punched me in the face once). I was in his dressing room, he was doing a gig, his guitar was laid out in his case and (I said to myself) 'Oh, come on Keith, just a touch. Just let me do an E chord' (laughs). He comes in and says: 'Nobody touches my guitar' (punches me). That's one of Chuck's biggest hits, baby (laughs)," Keith Richards said.
Talking with Planet Rock on the show Blues Power, Keith said that Chuck apologized later. He is a complex guy once you’ve got to know him, he once gave me a black-eye backstage of a gig of his. Chuck was in his normal mode by that time, mode of the little black bag, got the money and run. He left his guitar out in his dressing room and I just picked it up. He walks in and (says) ‘Nobody touches…’ (and punches Keith Richards). Few months later I get these apologetic (message) ‘Keith, I didn’t know it.’ (And I say) ‘Chuck, you did the right move. I wouldn’t let anybody touch mine either (laughs),” Keith Richards said.
Chuck Berry passed away in 2017 at the age of 90 near Wentzville, Missouri, United States. He was a huge influence to many other incredible guitars like Eric Clapton, John Lennon and Angus Young.

"I would have to go back to 'Are You Lonely For Me Baby'. That to me is the most superb R&B, the epitome (of that kind of music). I'm trying (to do it), I'm going for it (laughs)," Keith Richards said when answering fans' questions on his Youtube channel in 2016.
One year before, he had already listed the Freddie Scott song in an interview with BBC, as one of the records he would take to a desert island. "(It's) probably the (most) classic Rhythm and Blues record of all time. It's produced by Bert Berns, who also produced Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl', great producer. Here (he is with) Freddie Scott, one of the greatest Soul singers. I hope you are going to enjoy this one," he said.
Written and produced by Bert Berns, "Are You Lonely For Me" was first recorded by the American musician Freddie Scott. The song was Scott’s highest charting single on the R&B chart, hitting the number-one spot for four weeks, in early 1967. Berns is one of the most influential songwriters of all time. He has also written tracks like "Twist and Shout", "Piece of My Heart" and "Here Comes the Night".
As a producer, he worked on songs like "Baby, Please Don't Go", "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Under the Boardwalk". He had a short career in music, only from 1960 to 1967, passing away that last year at the age of 38. The other big hit that the singer Freddie Scott had was "Hey, Girl", a top ten hit in 1963. During his career he released five studio albums, four from 1964 to 1970 and the final one in 2001. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 74.The post The 2 songs Keith Richards said he would like to have written appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
