Tipping Culture Gone Too Far: Will That Be 22% Tip For Self Checkout?
You are being manipulated.
Stop letting that happen.
I’ll explain.
You might experience this monthly, if not weekly.
You go treat yourself to a single coffee for $2 at local shop, only for the screen to be turned around to you.
Would you like to TIP:
15% ?
20% ?
25% ?
Right off the bat I want to give you permission to turn the tables on them.
They’re trying to guilt you into giving.
Guilt you into tipping.
You decided to bless their establishment with your patronage, and this is how they repay your generosity, your loyalty?
It’s a slap in the face and I want you to see it as such.
So stand your ground and turn the shame on them.
‘TIPPING POINT’: Americans are now pushing back against excessive tipping culture — spending 38% less on “guilt tipping” in 2025 compared to a year earlier, as rising living costs force them to scale back.

Say: “It’s asking for a tip. Why? Who gets it? (Usually the clerk DOES NOT get the digital tip. You’re tipping the company)
Say: “How much does this company make a year? Why am I expected to supplement their staff’s income? This is a multi-million dollar company. They can’t pay their employees?”
Ask those next to you, “Do you like being guilted into giving tips?” Now you’ve killed the social pressure element that companies are relying on to get you tip by getting those next to you in line on your side, rather than on the side of the company.
And if I use self-checkout, and it asks for a tip, does that mean I get to tip myself? Yes. Yes it does. I’m taking myself to Toys R Us after this transaction! (Dang it, it’s closed!)
I was at the self checkout kiosk. It asked if I wanted to tip. Who am I tipping? I grabbed the water myself, scanned it myself, and paid it myself. Tipping culture is CRAZY in America. pic.twitter.com/4BYfz5ixOF

What about booking for a hotel?
Tip the website!
Tip Culture has gotten out of control

Then you have people that EXPECT you to be their boss and pay them, rather than the actual company they work for:
A viral video shows a delivery driver confronting a woman after she refused to tip, threatening to take the groceries back to the store.
The exchange sparked debate online about tipping culture and whether delivery drivers should rely on gratuities to make a fair wage pic.twitter.com/HcebS26xZq

By the way, this is theft on video. DO NOT let him take your stuff. Take it inside. Stand your ground, people!
It seems companies are trying to fight back.
It’s CUSTOMER VS COMPANIES
They notice people are pushing back against tipping culture and they don’t like it.
They want to keep you feeling guilty and living under their feet.
It’s a standoff.
This from Paducah KY ~ The tipping culture is over, if you are getting a tip, you are making more than most seniors, so the sign should read “No Seniors Are Allowed to order Food”… pic.twitter.com/vRjsf4oUtV

Translation:
“Don’t order food if you’re not prepared to take on the responsibility of paying our staff instead of us”
I understand the real reason for this is The Federal Reserve.
As they devalue the dollar, more and more people are struggling and desperate for tips, as companies need to do more to keep their greed levels high.
A classic normal tip scenario is an extra few dollars for the pizza guy.
But if you’re picking up the pizza yourself?
I am PICKING up some pizza later from @pizzahut and what the hell is this “Team Member Tip” option?! Tip culture is out of control man. Like that’s the whole reason ima go pick up to avoid delivery fee and tip ?? I use to work for PH. But this here is stupid. Pay workers MORE! pic.twitter.com/Nz2L91ZWAo

Also, forced tipping is infuriating. Target.com, I’m looking at you.
After the goods have been delivered it says you have the choice to tip. “Aww, that’s nice.”
Actually, no I don’t have the choice. All it says is the predetermined amount and a blank area to add $ amount. There is no ‘Skip’ or ‘No Tip’ option.
And you CAN’T use the Target website until you finish the tipping screen. It forces you.
Granted, I tend to tip for deliveries. But have I gotten poor service or decided I didnt want to tip just because? Yes.
What did I do? I think I gave 10 cents or 1 penny, whatever the lowest amount was to be able to move forward on the screen.
But if you want to tip $1,000 for some fruit, I guess that’s your right.
Ah yes, tipping, the ancient American ritual of subsidizing underpaid workers while the boss buys another yacht.

Here is current $ stats on DoorDash from Wikipedia:
I’m not buying the fact that their net income is $123M while their revenue is $10 BILLION.
So this company can’t pay it’s workers a living wage?
And it’s up to you to pay their employees via guilt? And their drivers are mad at you but not their billion dollar boss?
tipping culture has gone out of control to the point that billion dollar companies are subtly forcing customers to tip so they can get away with paying low wages https://t.co/9pfTut491W

It seems to be happening all over. Even in Germany.

Select “Nein!”
Time to put your foot down.
Yes, the workers will feel the pressure.
But it’s the workers turn to put their foot down and put the pressure on their billion dollar bosses, where the pressure should be.
They accepted slave treatment, why should we enable it?
Tipping, at this point, feels like enabling more than helping.
Tipping culture is getting out of hand

Though, you could always leave a video game tip, since retro video games are back in fashion.
Write the Konami code on the receipt: Start.

*If this article resonated with you, please consider sending me a tip. I would greatly appreciate it. Be sure it’s at least $20 or more, because any less is rude. And I did you a favor writing this article. Why won’t you tip me?! Not tipping is un-American!!
Thank you for your patronage. Please come again.
