Republican Governor Calls House Resolution Condemning Socialism “Performative”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called a House resolution condemning socialism “performative.” The resolution passed in a 285-98 vote, with 86 Democrats joining Republicans to approve the measure. No Republican voted to oppose the resolution. The House completed the vote shortly before New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, arrived in Washington D.C. to meet with President Trump. Performative. https://t.co/dPwPTUSQuU — Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantis) November 22, 2025 POLITICO has more: Speaker Mike Johnson and House GOP leaders have decried Mamdani’s election as the next mayor of the country’s largest city, citing his far-left politics and arguing he is the new, radical face of the Democratic Party. They’ve vowed to make him a centerpiece of their attacks against Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats on Capitol Hill have dismissed the Republicans broadsides over Mamdani, and party leaders criticized the GOP-written measure ahead of Friday’s vote, saying it “selectively lists certain despotic leaders and the harms of totalitarian regimes self-labeled as ‘socialist.’” They did not, however, formally recommend a no vote. A swath of moderate Democrats, especially from New York, are uncomfortable with Mamdani’s rise in their party. The debate over the symbolic measure was derailed for about 10 minutes after Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.) verbally attacked Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on the floor, accusing her of being a “friend” of the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro despite traveling to the country and seeing the abuses of his regime. The Republican governor previously said that young people gravitating toward socialism, instead of capitalism, do so because the United States isn’t practicing “true capitalism.” “Young people who prefer socialism to capitalism have no doubt been influenced by ideologically-slanted institutions of higher education, but they also conflate capitalism with some of the perversions of free enterprise they have seen in their lifetimes: Wall St. bailouts, corporate welfare and cronyism,” DeSantis said. “These perversions are basically a form of venture socialism for the well-connected and are anathema to a true market-based economy,” he added. (The Black Book of Communism, Harvard University Press, documents that about 100 million people died in the 20th century because of communism.) In addition to the communist fans, some 32 million young Americans are fine with socialism,” Cato’s writeup said.
