The Jim Sharman Diaries: Behind the Scenes on the Rocky Horror Show, 1970s
Tom Curry with Jim Sharman on the Rocky Horror theatre set in 1973
Jim Sharman directed The Rocky Horror Show (1973) and later film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). The Australian writer’s visual diaries take us behind-the-scenes, capturing Tim Curry and Richard O’Brien at the show’s final London performance of as well as moments from the cast recording.
Sharman’s papers also feature the musical’s original screenplay, adapted from the musical, and written by Sharman and Richard O’Brien. It reveals some of the influences that shaped the show’s key characters, such as Riff-Raff, who drew inspiration from Max Schreck’s Count Orlok, from the 1922 film, Nosferatu. We see how the sci-fi styling envisioned in the Rocky Horror script comes to life among the pages of the diaries; but it’s the off-stage moments where they really shine, with behind-the-scenes photos
