NewsBusters Podcast: Why Is The Low-Trust Media Still So Influential?

On a recent radio interview, we discussed why the major media performs so poorly in polls about trust in the news, and yet, they are still influential. Congress has low approval ratings -- lower than the press! -- and yet Congress is still our legislative authority. People will say they don't like Congress, but they like their own representatives. It may be like that with the media -- they don't trust them as a whole, but they have favorites.  The national media elites still have the power to set the agenda, to shine a spotlight on exactly what they want to emphasize, and to try and bury stories they don't like -- like stories that make Trump look good, or stories where the violent criminal is an illegal immigrant. At NewsBusters, we believe that the power to decide what is "news" must still be challenged in every news cycle. We don't expect the media to reform itself -- although the Left is disturbed at any expression of moving major media outlets one tick toward the center -- see Bari Weiss at CBS. So far, there's not a lot of change on air at CBS. Then: Scott Jennings is doing a lot of interviews to promote his new book on President Trump, A Revolution of Common Sense, and part of that is Trump’s battles with the press. He entered hostile territory on the podcast of Kara Swisher, who despises Elon Musk and defends energetic censorship by Big Tech. She suggested that banning the New York Post from Twitter for 17 days and blatantly lying that Hunter's laptop was a Russian disinformation plot is just politics as usual. Kara claimed she didn’t like it, but hey, it’s politics as usual.  These are the leftists that claim they uphold truth and democracy. But they're unashamed about lying to win elections. Jennings also came up in a recent podcast with Joy Reid. She claimed Jennings was a phony who hates Trump: “[M]ost of the Republicans who serve Donald Trump obediently and live on their knees hate him. We know they hate him. We know they don’t respect him. We know that they don’t — they don’t believe anything coming out of their mouths,” she posited. That is not accurate for Scott. You can disagree with some of what Trump says or does, and still defend him against the leftist onslaught. Joy Reid thinks we're all worth disrespecting: “If Trump is like a proto-fascist, which he is, and you’re down with it, then you’re essentially saying you’re going to align the former party of Lincoln with fascism. Then, you know, there’s no reason for me to respect you." Reid lost enough respect that MSNBC dumped her.  Enjoy the podcast below. It's audio only, since our video team was on vacation.
