HORRIFIC: Man Mauled To Death After Climbing Into Lion Cage [WATCH]
Absolutely horrific story to share with you out of Brazil, where a man climbed over the guard rails, climbed down into a lion cage at a zoo and was horrifically mauled and eaten.
On November 30, 2025, 19-year-old Gerson de Melo Machado, nicknamed “Vaqueirinho,” died after scaling a 6-meter wall and entering a lioness’s enclosure at João Pessoa Zoo in Brazil; the 19-year-old lioness, born in captivity, attacked but did not eat him, and authorities ruled out euthanizing her.
Machado had 16 prior arrests, mostly for vandalizing police vehicles—a pattern evident in a video interview where he vows to “break cars again” upon release—along with documented mental health issues and a recent psychiatric evaluation suggesting suicidal tendencies.

NOTE: LEONA
Leona, the lioness at Arruda Câmara Park, is doing well and will continue to receive all necessary care. After the incident, she was immediately evaluated by the technical team and continues to be monitored and constantly accompanied, as she experienced a high level of stress.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO REINFORCE THAT AT NO TIME WAS THE POSSIBILITY OF EUTHANASIA CONSIDERED.
Leona is healthy, does not show aggressive behavior outside the context of the incident, and will not be sacrificed. The protocol for situations like this predicts exactly what is currently being done: monitoring, behavioral evaluation, and specialized care.
The Bica team—doctors, veterinarians, caregivers, and technicians—is fully dedicated to Leona’s well-being, ensuring that she remains healthy, emotionally stabilizes, and resumes her routine safely.
