Spirit came together in Los Angeles in 1967, when Randy California, his stepfather Ed Cassidy, Jay Ferguson, Mark Andes, and John Locke joined forces after earlier projects, including the Red Roosters. They signed with Lou Adler’s Ode Records and, in early 1968, released their debut album, Spirit. The record reached number thirty one on the Billboard two hundred and stayed on the charts for more than half a year, giving the band a strong start.
