Mountain formed on Long Island, New York, in 1969 when guitarist and vocalist Leslie West joined with bassist-vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight, and drummer N. D. Smart to create a band built around powerful guitar work, deep blues roots, and hard rock energy. West had been playing in R&B and blues contexts before seeking a harder sound, and Pappalardi, already known for his work producing the Cream album Disraeli Gears, brought a broader musical perspective to the group.
