Helen Folasade Adu was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1959 to a Nigerian father and an English mother, and she moved to England as a young child after her parents separated. She grew up near Colchester in Essex and later studied fashion design at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, working as a fashion designer and part-time model before music became her primary focus.
