Prominent Trump Critic Announces Congressional Run

Well-known Trump critic George Conway, who was once married to Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, announced on Tuesday that he’s running for Congress. Conway, a former Republican, is running as a Democrat for the seat being vacated by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY). Conway’s central focus for his campaign is Trump. “I’m running for Congress in NY-12, my home. We have a demented, criminal president running the country like a mob operation—government by the boss, for the boss. We need Democratic fighters who will defend the rule of law and deliver government by the people. Join us,” Conway said. Don’t get me wrong, Maduro is a bad guy and he’s probably guilty of all the crimes he’s been charged with in the Southern District of New York. But President Trump is doing this without consultation to Congress.” The White House did not return a message seeking comment. Conway is a first-time candidate who only recently registered as a Democrat ahead of filing to run in the deep blue district being vacated by Rep. Jerrold Nadler. A former Republican, Conway left the GOP in protest during Trump’s first term. Conway joins a crowded Democratic primary, which includes former President John F. Kennedy’s grandson Jack Schlossberg, state Assemblymember Alex Borres, former Nadler aide and state Assemblymember Micah Lasher, and New York City Council Member Erik Bottcher. George Conway, an attorney and prominent Trump foe, announced his plans to run for Jerry Nadler’s soon-to-be-empty House seat. He’s now the ninth candidate in the NY-12 primary. https://t.co/i352zYOmbj — New York Magazine (@NYMag) January 6, 2026 CNN noted: Conway’s congressional campaign is a long way from 2016 when he voted for Trump, and his then-wife, Kellyanne Conway, steered the 45th president to victory as his campaign manager. “I was crying in joy for her,” said Conway. “I didn’t really realize how bad, how horrible this guy would be.” At the time, Conway was a partner at Wachtell Lipton, a prominent law firm in New York, where he worked on commercial litigation. When Trump won, the Conways moved to Washington, where Kellyanne became a senior White House advisor, and George was the administration’s pick to be head of the Civil Division at the Justice Department. But privately, he started having reservations about Trump, and withdrew himself from consideration for the DOJ post in June 2017. The next year, he went public attacking Trump and gained millions of followers on social media. He also left the Republican Party and co-founded the anti-Trump Lincoln Project and the Society for the Rule of Law. “I was a Republican until 2018 when I realized it had become a personality cult, and it no longer stood for things that I had stood for for many years,” Conway said.
