Grateful Dead Co-Founder Passes Away
The family of Bob Weir have announced his death at age 78. The singer, songwriter and guitarist was a co-founder of the Grateful Dead.
“He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could.” wrote the family. “Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues.”
During Weir’s career with the Grateful Dead, he mostly played rhythm guitar and sang many of the band’s songs.
In 1994, Weir was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead. Thirty years later, he was awarded Kennedy Center Honors that recognized the band.
The Grateful Dead are remembered for the songs “Truckin’,” Casey Jones” and “Touch Of Grey,” among others.

“Workingman’s Dead” and “American Beauty” stand out as studio efforts though the band was known as a live act with countless bootleg editions.
Weir was also a member of Grateful Dead offshoots, The Other Ones, The Dead and Dead & Co.
