Foreign. The U.S. planned takeover of Greenland is once again defended by US President Donald Trump, opening up new trade tariffs against countries opposing his plans for the territory.
The statement is the latest in a series of developments where tariffs are lifted as a pressure agent.
"I can impose tariffs on countries that don't agree to Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security," Trump said at a White House health event.
The customs threat came up during a meeting on investment in health care in rural areas, where the president reappeared in the way he had previously pressed European leaders with threats of tariffs on medicines.
"I could do that with Greenland as well," Donald Trump said.
Meanwhile, U.S. members of Congress marked against the president's line on a visit to Copenhagen on Friday.
"Greenland should be seen as one of our allies and not as one of our assets," Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said at a press briefing.
