US imposes punitive tariffs on Sweden for criticising invasion of Greenland

Foreign. The U.S. planned invasion of Greenland is now being again defended by U.S. President Donald Trump, who imposes new trade tariffs on countries opposing his plans for the territory. Including Sweden.

Trump is now announcing a 10% tariff on Truth Social – targeting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland – which will be raised to 25 percent on June 1, unless Greenland is sold to the United States.

How it is intended to work for goods that are not marked origin in Sweden is unclear, as the EU is a common customs area. Possibly the punitive tariffs apply to the whole of the EU.

The statement is the latest in a series of developments where tariffs are lifted as a pressure agent.

"I can impose tariffs on countries that don't join Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security," Trump said earlier at a health event at the White House.

The customs threat came up during a meeting on investment in health care in rural areas, where the president reappeared in the way he had previously pressed European leaders with threats of tariffs on medicines.

"I could do that with Greenland as well," Donald Trump said.
