Media Blackout: Apple News Continues to Suppress Right-Leaning Outlets in New Year

After a dismal record to close out 2025, Apple News has unfortunately shown renewed commitment to left-wing bias in the first two weeks of 2026.  Apple News did not use a single right-leaning outlet among its top 20 articles in its morning editions between Jan. 1 and Jan. 14, 2026. Apple News continued its streak of completely excluding right-leaning media outlets across its 280 top stories.  Instead of highlighting news stories from popular right-leaning outlets such as Fox News or the New York Post, Apple News has consistently published articles from leftist, elitist media outlets like The Associated Press, The Washington Post and NBC News as well as center outlets like The Wall Street Journal and Reuters. Apple News picked headlines for the first two weeks of January 2026 that attempted to present President Donald Trump and his administration in a negative light. For example, the news app ran a story from The Atlantic with a headline that read: “Trump Threatens Venezuela’s New Leader With a Fate Worse Than Maduro’s.” The subheadline also framed Trump in a bad light: “The president told The Atlantic that Delcy Rodriguez needs to comply with U.S. wishes—or else.” A headline from leftist British outlet The Guardian read, “US executions surged in 2025 to highest level in 16 years.”  The biased findings for the first two weeks of 2026 continue Apple News editors’ unbroken streak of refusing to select right-leaning outlets for its morning editions that goes back to Nov. 5 of last year. On that date, the news app linked to right-leaning British outlet The Telegraph for a story about the atrocities taking place in Sudan, but Apple News has not linked to another right-leaning outlet since.  Disturbingly, unlike some of the other news aggregators that rely on algorithms to display top news, Apple News editors select stories to run each day. This is especially concerning considering the growing prevalence of news aggregators like the Big Four News Apps (Apple News, Google News, MSN and Yahoo News). According to a report from the Reuters Institute, “engagement with traditional media sources such as TV, print, and news websites continues to fall, while dependence on social media, video platforms, and online aggregators grows,” particularly in the United States.  News aggregators like the Big Four News Apps are tools or platforms that gather articles from multiple media sources into a single place either through algorithmic selection or human curation, and they are a growing source for people to get their news. As a leading news aggregator, Apple News has shown itself to be one of the worst platforms when it comes to bias. Methodology: During the time period Jan. 1 - Jan. 11, 2026, MRC researchers examined the top 20 AllSides-rated news stories featured on Apple News each day at approximately 10:00 AM ET and the top 20 AllSides-rated news stories between Jan. 12 - Jan. 14, 2026 at approximately 8:30 AM ET. MRC researchers used the AllSides media bias ratings, which categorize an outlet as “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right” or “right” to determine the overall bias presented by Apple News and analyzed the results.
