President Trump Grants Clemency To GOP Congressman’s Son
It’s clemency season.
President Trump has granted clemency to the son of a Republican lawmaker.
On Thursday of last week, Trump granted clemency to the son of Rep. Steve Womack.
Rep. Steve Womack’s son, James Womack, was previously found guilty on federal charges of distributing meth.
People reported more on Trump’s latest move:
President Donald Trump has granted clemency to a Republican congressman’s son, who was behind bars for distributing methamphetamine.
Trump, 79, officially commuted the federal sentence of James Phillip Womack, the son of Rep. Steve Womack, on Thursday, Jan. 15, according to the Office of the Pardon Attorney. An official Executive Grant of Clemency issued by the U.S. Department of Justice formally announced the commutation of the Arkansas congressman’s son.
The Republican politician — a father to three sons with his wife, Terri, per his Congress bio — expressed gratitude to Trump in a statement obtained by Arkansas outlets KTHV and KNWA.
“I am grateful to President Trump for this gracious and thoughtful action,” the congressman said. “The commutation has allowed my son to be with his family during a profoundly difficult time, and the President’s phone conversation with my wife and her care team made an impression that I’ll cherish forever.”
The congressman’s son was sentenced in federal court in May 2024 to a $1,900 fine and eight years in prison for distributing more than five grams of methamphetamine, according to Office of the Pardon Attorney records.
His sentence also included five years of supervised release, which he will still have to serve, per KTHV, KNWA and KATV.

KNWA reported James Womack has had a lengthy criminal history:
Court records show James Womack has a lengthy criminal history involving drug- and firearm-related offenses dating back several years.
His first arrest occurred in Sept. 2018, when he was taken into custody in Benton County on multiple charges after police recovered methamphetamine, a firearm and drug paraphernalia from a vehicle connected to him. He later entered a plea agreement in that case and, in April 2019, was sentenced in state court to nine years in prison on several felony charges.
James Womack was considered for early release in 2020 as part of the Arkansas Department of Correction’s COVID-19 response and was later released. He was arrested again in July 2022 in Rogers and then once more in Jan. 2023 following a police pursuit in Tontitown that ended with officers locating him hiding near a residence.
Separate from the state cases, federal prosecutors indicted James Womack on April 26, 2023. The indictment charged him with distributing more than five grams of methamphetamine and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
U.S. Rep. Steve Womack’s (R–Ark.) office released the following statement to KNWA/FOX24:
“I am grateful to President Trump for this gracious and thoughtful action. The commutation has allowed my son to be with his family during a profoundly difficult time, and the President’s phone conversation with my wife and her care team made an impression that I’ll cherish forever.”
