Socialist coup in Spain: Amnesty to half a million illegal immigrants

Foreign. Spain's Socialist-led government pushes through a massive amnesty for illegal immigrants via royal decree. The decision raises rage on the right wing and is accused of circumventing parliament.
"Tyrannen Sánchez hates and wants to replace the Spanish people," said Santiago Abascal, leader of immigration-critical Vox.

Spain's Socialist government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has agreed with the extreme left to carry out a pulp mill for around 500,000 illegal immigrants.

The action is to be adopted by a royal decree, which means that Parliament is rounded and a binding vote in Congress is avoided.

The settlement between the Socialist Party PSOE and Podemos is expected to be approved by the Council of Ministers. One thing similarly, the proposal has been blocked in Parliament for over a year due to lack of support.

According to the arrangement, persons without a residence permit who can show that they have been in Spain before 31 December 2025 and have stayed for at least five months must be able to obtain temporary residence and work permits, provided that they do not have a serious criminal record.

When an application is submitted, ongoing expulsion cases must be paused. The permits are valid for one year and can be extended. The left-wing Podemos estimates that over half a million people are covered.

From the Podemos, the decision is openly celebrated. The party's former gender equality minister and current EU parliamentarian Irene Montero describes the amnesty as an "equipped action for social justice" and says the process should be done quickly. She believes the measure is needed to protect immigrants from what she calls "racist violence" and talks about "institutional racism."

Critics call the decision undemocratic and warn that it sends signals that could attract more people to go to the country illegally.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal is harshly criticizing the prime minister. On X, he writes:

"500,000 illegals! Tyrant Sánchez hates the Spanish people. He wants to replace them. That's why he wants to create a drag factor through decree, to speed up the invasion. It must be stopped. Repatriations, deportations and re-migration."

Even Vox EU parliamentarian Hermann Tertsch accuses the government of trying to import voters:

"These criminals want to bring all of Africa here to see if they can at least buy the voices of those who don't know Spanish," he said.

The decision is taken in the light of a sharp increase in illegal immigration. According to estimates from the think tank Funas, the number of illegals has increased from about 107,000 in 2017 to close to 840,000 by 2025. Funcas warns that mass Nigeria does not reduce illegal immigration if today's inflow continues.

Critics also point to the security aspect. In the Basque Country, the regional police said Ertzaintza last autumn that 64 per cent of those arrested on suspicion of crimes were foreigners, despite migrants making up a significantly smaller proportion of the population. At the same time, a report by CEU-CEFAS states that foreigners are heavily over-represented in serious crime and in the country's prisons.
