Some incredible numbers. It’s safe to say it’s been a massive decade so far for country music. With the genre being the biggest (and arguably best) it’s ever been, the demand for country has seemingly grown exponentially. Thanks to this, the genre has seen nothing short of an explosion in streaming numbers from its biggest stars such as Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Zach Bryan and more. As we all know, numbers aren’t everything when it comes to music. There are hundreds upon thousands of moving songs, artists and albums that will never see a #1 hit, #1 album or a gold or platinum certification from the RIAA. With that being said, however, it’s always interesting to see just how massive the biggest hits have gotten over the years. If you’ve been paying any attention to sales over the past year or so, you’re well aware that there has been quite a lot of shake-up when it comes to all-time sales lists. Notably, back in October, Combs passed Garth Brooks’ long-standing record of being the highest-selling country artist of all time. That, however, didn’t last long as Wallen passed both en route to not only becoming the highest-selling country artist ever but also becoming the third-highest-selling artist in U.S. history. While we’ve already looked at the Top 30 highest-selling artists in the genre’s history upon Wallen taking the top spot, I thought today was the perfect time to look at what the best-selling songs are as well. Recently, Chris Stapleton made history as “Tennessee Whiskey” became the first country song in history to sell 20 million units and receive double-diamond certification from the RIAA, becoming just the third song ever to do so. Quite clearly, it stands as the highest-selling song in the genre, but what other songs are among the most consumed and purchased? Unsurprisingly, Morgan Wallen absolutely dominates here, owning six of the Top 25 songs, with five of them selling over 10 million units and receiving diamond status. Coming in second with five is none other than Luke Combs, who also has five diamond-certified songs One thing to keep in mind with this list is the fact that it’s INCREDIBLY recency-biased thanks to the popularity of streaming and the fact that the RIAA allows for 150 on-demand streams to count as one unit sold. As for what that means for this list, classic tracks that may have sold incredibly well back in the day (and even stream fairly well today) simply can’t compete with the way new songs are being consumed on a day-to-day and even hour-to-hour basis. The recency bias is so strong, in fact, that the oldest song on this list is Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” at just 21 years old. As for the newest song, that would be Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which has already sold over 10 million units despite being out for only 22 months.
