FACT CHECK: No, Morgan Wallen Did NOT Donate Over $500,000 To ICE
Recently, it seems as if a majority of the misinformation you see online these days comes from AI-generated slop. If you recall, we’ve covered a plethora of different schemes lately, ranging from false rumors of major artists such as Eric Church headlining Turning Point USA’s alternative Super Bowl halftime show to Dolly Parton and Reba going on a “One Last Ride” tour. Even more disturbingly, last month, a Central Texas resident by the name of Anthony McAlfney, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, had money stolen from him by scammers posing as both Cody Johnson and Chris Young using AI.
This time around, however, a false claim is being spread all around Facebook the old-fashioned way, simply putting up a claim using graphics not much different than those you see from us here at Whiskey Riff or any other major news account on social media. This week’s popular false report is that reigning Billboard Artist of the Year and country superstar, Morgan Wallen, has donated a staggering $514,000 to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to further support mass deportations in the country.
It should go without saying that ICE has been nothing short of a hot-button topic as of late. Though the mere mention of ICE and mass deportations has been a major point of discontent in the country for the last decade or so, tensions have reached an all-time high in the past month due to the fatal shootings of both Renee Good and Alex Pretti at protests in Minneapolis.
The claims surrounding Wallen’s supposed donation to ICE stem from three viral Facebook posts created from the accounts Rhythm Republic, Country & Soul and Heartbreak Rodeo, all of which post clearly AI-generated images of the “Whiskey Glasses” singer. Though most of their AI-generated posts of Wallen don’t gain an incredible amount of traction on the platform, these false ICE donation claims have been going viral.
In particular, Rhythm Republic’s post has gained the most traction on Facebook, garnering a staggering 22,300 likes and over 300 shares.
Country & Soul’s, on the other hand, has an equally concerning amount of engagement, racking up 12,300 likes and 3,200 shares. Though there’s some comments rightfully calling the post “fake news,” there’s also a concerning amount of people who are taking the post at face value, cheering on the false claim.
Interstingly, all three of the aforementioned Facebook posts do actually link off to “articles” diving into the completely false story under three different domain names. Taking a look at Country & Soul’s post, it links to a site titled “Pure Motion” that proceeds to redirect you to another site “Sport News Daily 24 Blog.” Unsurprisingly, the article is AI-generated slop full of unsourced claims that Wallen donated the $514,000 to ICE.
Clearly, Wallen did not, in fact, donate over half a million dollars to ICE. Beyond the fact that Wallen himself, despite constantly being labeled as MAGA, has never once shared anything remotely political throughout his career, a donation of this magnitude, whether it’s ICE or any other organization in the country, would be covered by nearly every news outlet. Additionally, ICE is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security, which is funded by tax dollars… they don’t accept direct monetary donations.
In an age where misinformation is running rampant, especially on the likes of Facebook, if something seems fishy or too good to be true, chances are they 100% are. As always, a quick Google search can clear up the spread of false information relatively quickly.
