“For Kids Young & Old”: Why The Turnpike Troubadours Just Dropped A Song for ‘Yo Gabba Gabba!’
The future generation of country music fans is in the making. It’s always cool to see a crossover between children’s TV shows and country music. Popular children’s programming has consistently featured famous faces to highlight music.
Sesame Street has featured a diverse range of musical guests over the years, who sing educational songs for its young viewers. Country music has had a strong presence on the show over the years, with artists such as Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Loretta Lynn, Tim McGraw, Dolly Parton, Kelsea Ballerini, Carrie Underwood, and Brad Paisley performing.
Last year, Chris Stapleton made an appearance on Sesame Street and shared a song called “You’ve Got A Friend In Music.” The tune tells children that no matter how they feel, there is a song that can help them through it, and, honestly, this song would fit on a Chris Stapleton record without the Sesame Street characters’ voices.
But it’s even cooler when you see a children’s show loop in a musician who is not as widely known as Stapleton to create a song. Over the weekend, the Turnpike Troubadours announced that they teamed up with the popular Yo Gabba Gabba! for a duet titled “Sunrise, Sunset.”
The Oklahoma-founded band has been on a hot streak, with their popularity outside the red dirt music scene rising rapidly. Turnpike released its sixth studio album, The Price of Admission, in April 2025, receiving high praise from fans and critics alike.
Marking the second release since the band returned from an extended hiatus, The Price of Admission proved to many (myself included) why Turnpike is ultimately one of the greatest bands in the history of the genre, featuring some all-time tracks from the group such as “Heaven Passing Through,” “On The Red River” and the severely underrated, “Ruby Ann.”
Now the younger generation is getting a taste of music from the greatest red dirt band in history with this children’s song, and, like Stapleton’s Sesame Street tune, it’s a hit. The song includes educational content, teaching children that sunrises and sunsets signal the end of each day. While the lyrics may be simpler than fans are used to, the sound remains traditional Turnpike Troubadours at its core. The fiddle takes the melody, leading the upbeat tempo, met with Evan Felker’s silky-smooth vocals.
Given that Even Felker has small children, this crossover makes a little more sense, and honestly, I’m here for it regarding the musical education of today’s youth.
