Lee Brice Reveals More Details About Turning Point USA Super Bowl Halftime Show – Including Why He Said Yes
Ahead of his performance at the Turning Point USA All-American Halftime Show, country singer Lee Brice is revealing more about the alternate Super Bowl halftime show – and explaining why he agreed to be a part of it.
If you’re not familiar with the origins of the All-American Halftime Show, it all started back in October when the NFL announced that Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny would be headlining the halftime show at Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California on February 8.
The global superstar and Puerto Rican rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has been famously outspoken against President Donald Trump, and even announced that he wouldn’t be touring in the United States due to the president’s immigration policies.
Naturally his selection to headline the Apple Music halftime show led to plenty of backlash from conservative football fans, who believe he was chosen as a middle finger of sorts to President Donald Trump.
Even the president himself weighed in on the halftime show:
“I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it — it’s, like, crazy. They blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell previously voiced his support for Bad Bunny and dismissed criticism of his selection as the halftime performer:
“He’s one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world. That’s what we try to (choose). It’s an important stage to us. It’s an important element to the entertainment value. It’s carefully thought through. I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism.
It’s pretty hard to do when you have literally hundreds of millions of people that are watching. We’re confident it’s going to be a great show. He understands the platform that he’s on, and I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment.”
The controversy led to Turning Point USA, the organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk, to announce that they would be staging an alternate, pro-America halftime show this year, which will feature performances from Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett.
For Brice though, he says it wasn’t anything against Bad Bunny that made him want to be a part of TPUSA’s counterprogramming:
“I don’t know much about him. I’ve heard he’s won a bunch of Grammys and he’s a great artist or whatever. But, you know, I didn’t get asked to play the other Super Bowl, but I did get asked to do this and be a part of something that I believe in.”
During an interview yesterday with Fox News, Brice says the halftime show is a reflection of the organization’s late founder’s mission:
“Charlie Kirk wanted everybody to have a microphone, and it’s a celebration of what he believed in and what he brought to the table. And I’m just proud. You know, I’m proud to be an American. And I’m excited. I’m a musician. I get to go play music.”
As for how the halftime show will work, it sounds like some of that’s still being figured out, but Lee revealed that he’ll have around 7 minutes to perform – although it sounds like there’s going to be some collaboration between the four artists on the show:
“It’s pretty quick, you know. I mean, I got like a seven-minute section. Kid’s got like an eight-minute section. And, like, it’s really so cool. We went through it all. We’ve talked about it. We’ve got it all planned out. I think it’s going to be really fun, kind of a mashup of stuff. Kind of, you know, just like any Super Bowl halftime, which is, again, what we get to do. This is going to be really fun.”
It’ll be interesting to see how many viewers Turning Point USA manages to draw to their alternate halftime show. If it turns out to be a meaningful portion of the Super Bowl’s viewership, something like this has the potential to change how the NFL and Jay-Z’s production company, Roc Nation, go about picking halftime performers in the future. But if not, this may end up being a one and done.
