Ranking Chris Stapleton’s 10 Best Soul-Shaking Love Songs

It’s love month, and Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. And while I normally blare sad country songs that make me happy through my headphones during the day, this week in particular, I like to switch it up and remind myself that there are some beautiful love songs out there. But, don’t get me wrong, a sad country song can do a lot for the soul, but it’s also important to celebrate love, especially if you have a special someone during the month of February. Country music can tell a story in ways many other genres cannot, and it’s a foundational element for all country songwriters and singers. I am sure, as you read that sentence, a few country artists come to mind who always say they are storytellers before they are singers and performers. It’s part of what makes country lyrics so compelling and resonates deeply with listeners. And no one can pen a love song quite like Chris Stapleton. Stapleton is quite the wordsmith when it comes to expressing his deep feelings for his wife, Morgane Stapleton. He often pens tender songs inspired by her and their once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. And while we all know and love the great love songs like “I Think I’m In Love With You,” “When I’m With You,” “Loving You on My Mind,” or “Millionaire,” that just scratches the surface of the long songs found in his catalog. Stapleton has many stellar love songs in his discography, and I’ve decided to go through and try to sort through the near impossible task of my top ten love songs the Kentucky native has gifted us with throughout his career. So without further ado, here are my top ten Chris Stapleton love songs. Honorary Mention: “Tennessee Whiskey” To be honest, I wrestled with including “Tennessee Whiskey” on this list for quite some time. Why, you may ask? Well, first off, it was initially recorded by David Allan Coe, and then again by George Jones, which went to #2 on the country charts. Stapleton’s success with “Tennessee Whiskey” is undeniable, he took it to new heights. The silky-smooth love song is a classic in his catalog, but since it was already kind of a well-known hit, we’re just gonna call it an honorable mention. It’s the de facto Chris Stapleton song, but personally, I think he has better ones. 10. “Loving You On My Mind” 9. “Simple Song” Some might not consider this a love song, and honestly, when I first heard “Simple Song,” I wasn’t sold. But as I’ve matured a little and found myself in a long-term relationship, “Simple Song” feels like a love song to me. Like Lauren Watkins’ “Average Joe & Plain Jane,” this tune highlights how beautiful and intimate the mundane acts of life can be. The big acts and grand gestures of love keep the spark alive, but the everyday acts of building a life together are the foundation of an everlasting love. “But I love my lifeMan, it’s somethin’ to seeIt’s the kids and the dogs, and you and me It’s the way, it’s alrightEverything goes wrongIt’s a sound of a slow, simple song” 8. “It Takes A Woman” This beautiful song is about how the right woman can make you feel even more like a man. The complex harmonies and the union of Morgane’s voice with Chris bear so much emotion. While Chris sings of how Morgane is the ultimate woman for him, it takes a man to pull down the rough and tough walls to sing with vulnerability like this. “It takes a womanA woman who sees the best part of meThrough all that I amIt takes a womanOh, it takes a womanTo be all I can, to feel like a man…” 7. “When I’m With You” 6. “Weight Of Your World” Some might not see this as a lovey-dovey song, but I think this beautifully outlines the highs and lows of being in a partnership. It highlights the hardships of bearing each other’s emotions, and while love isn’t always easy, they wake up and choose each other every day. “Give me your darkest hourGive me your deepest fearJust give me a call and I’ll be hereGive me the bars and chains that won’t set you freeGive me the weight of your worldAnd lay it on me…” 5. “I Think I’m In Love With You” 4. “Joy Of My Life”  3. “Millionaire” Off Stapleton’s 2017 record, From A Room: Volume 2, this is a classic Stapleton love song. Showing that love is worth the weight of the world when it’s with the right woman. With Morgane’s voice on the backing vocals, you can hear the passion in each of their voices as they sing about their one-of-a-kind love. “I got a woman with eyes that shineDown deep as a diamond mineShe’s my treasure so very rareShe’s made me a millionaire…” 2. “More of You” 1. “The Day I Die” I personally believe that “The Day I Die” is one of Stapleton’s most underrated love songs. Every time I fire up this track, it always brings tears to my eyes as Stapleton sings of love so profoundly that even the thought of losing it makes him never want to love again. It’s a beautiful ballad that blends a love song with heartbreak, imagining not having your person by your side. Stapleton sings the song from a heartbreak perspective, feeling like the love he lost might have been too good to be true and questioning if it was true, as the authentic feelings he carried for this person were so heavy. He declares in the lyrics that he will not be able to live happily without the one he loves. “The Day I Die,” in my humble opinion, is the most profound love song in Stapleton’s catalog. If you aren’t familiar with this one yet, do yourself a favor and turn it up to max volume. The post Ranking Chris Stapleton’s 10 Best Soul-Shaking Love Songs first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
