Costco’s Kirkland Signature olive oil (especially organic/imported lines) is facing major shortages and some discontinuations in 2026—thanks to poor Mediterranean harvests (droughts/heat in Spain, Italy, Greece slashing production 30%+, wholesale prices tripling, warehouses running dry). This is supplier power in action: limited sources mean higher costs, empty shelves, and forced changes. Using Porter’s lens (supplier bargaining power up, threat of substitutes key), here’s the simple 3-point checklist for adapting when “Product X” (olive oil or any staple) vanishes: 1. Find another supplier for the item. 2. Find a better substitute item that still gets the job done. 3. Find a way to do without the item entirely. Olive oil example: • Point 1: Check Walmart, local grocers, or online for other brands/stock. • Point 2: Switch to avocado oil (great for high-heat), sunflower, or grapeseed. • Point 3: Reformulate meals—no oil needed (use butter/lard, vinegar dressings, or oil-free recipes).
