Silver salvaged from wreck of SS Gairsoppa in 2011 (Sarah Sundin collection) 85 Years Ago—Feb. 17, 1941: Off Ireland, German U-boat U-101 sinks British freighter Gairsoppa (85 killed) carrying 2,800 bars of silver to fund the war (110 tons recovered in 2011).
