“Livin’ On Marfa Time”: Koe Wetzel Shows Off Texas Aoudad Hunt
Koe Wetzel is truly a man who is everywhere all at once. The East Texas rocker is a father, a stellar musician, and an avid hunter, and it’s always amazing to see how he balances it all. And now, he has another beauty to add to his trophy collection.
I guess you can add a local lobbyist to that list as well, given that the “February 28, 2016” singer is petitioning for that day to become an official holiday in his hometown of Pittsburg, Texas. In turn, the day would officially become “Koe Wetzel Day” in the 4,000-person town.
“Make ‘Koe Wetzel Day’ an official holiday.”
All that to say, Koe Wetzel is a very busy man, but despite all the time he spends on the road, in the studio, or out doing press, he always manages to find time to get into the woods to hunt some game. Wetzel frequently posts on social media during deer season the big bucks he takes down across the nation, and during the summer, we often see Wetzel out on the water noodling or casting a line.
However, Wetzel is also a fan of some more exotic excursions and shares the unusual game he hunts during these trips. Back in 2024, Wetzel showed off a big mountain lion in Colorado that stood just about as tall as Wetzel himself. In the snowy wilderness of Colorado, Koe (along with some help) hunted down and bagged a massive big cat. The “Werewolf” singer shared the photo of himself holding up and showing off his kill with the caption:
“Last week I bought a one way ticket to Colorado to check off a bucket list hunt of mine. This trip had a lot of ups and downs but it was all worth it in the end. I can’t thank Hunt Nest and Clay Hill enough for making it all happen and putting me on this once in a lifetime mountain cat!”
Once in a lifetime indeed… and for those not familiar, mountain lion has a pretty mild taste, like a lean pork.

More recently, Wetzel went on an exotic hunt in his home state of Texas, heading out to Marfa to hunt some Aoudad, also known as Barbary Sheep. On February 17, Wetzel shared an image of himself standing next to a massive Aoudad in the Texas desert.

The massive sheep breed is originally from North Africa, and was brought to Texas for exotic game hunting. Since introducing the breed into the terrain in the 1950s, they have flourished in the rocking area, maybe a little too well. According to the Texas Standard, the Aoudad is now an invasive species that often displaces endangered bighorn sheep. They also “overgraze vegetation, compete for resources, and transmit diseases, leading to year-round, unlimited hunting.”
As for how an Aoudad tastes… many say it’s a sweet yet tough, meat that is a mix of antelope and goat flavors. It’s often recommended to use their meat when slow-cooking. Congrats on the hunt, man.The post “Livin’ On Marfa Time”: Koe Wetzel Shows Off Texas Aoudad Hunt first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
